BUILDING IT AMBIDEXTERITY IN PARADOXICAL TIMES: THE ROLE OF IT PROJECT AMBIDEXTERITY

    Get PDF
IT ambidexterity, the ability to simultaneously explore and exploit IT resources, is becoming increasingly important because it influences the organizational agility and helps organizations deal with growing levels of paradoxical tensions. In response to the opportunities and threats in the digital world, firms implement IT projects that face decision paradoxes which confront aspects such as control and autonomy, stability and change, and short- and long-term view. Extant theories describe how certain IT components contribute to IT ambidexterity; however, the literature is silent on how effectively managing these paradoxes in IT projects influences IT ambidexterity. To address this gap, this paper proposes a new construct, IT project ambidexterity, the ability to ambidextrously deal with paradoxes in IT projects, evaluate its influence on IT ambidexterity with a sample of 132 Brazilian IT executives, and found a relevant effect of IT project ambidexterity on IT ambidexterity

Cloud computing, a peculiar form of storage and of making information available, has attracted much interest for its potential to significantly alter required investment in information technology infrastructure. As a paradox, while organizations can benefit from the possibility of implementing cloud computing, decision makers are faced with the dilemma arising from the possibility that competitors will have access to previously scarce or unique resources, essentially sources of competitive advantage. The question that arises is whether cloud computing increases the complexity of investment decisions or, in contrast, simplifies the analysis by allowing resources to be released for investment in other skills required by the business. This research investigates what antecedents are associated with the decision to undertake cloud computing and evaluates the effects existing IT infrastructure and the size and amount of investments have in this decision. Analysis of secondary data was used to develop a structural model, which is accompanied by explanations of the relationships uncovered. This paper's contributions include a theoretical explanation of the quandary related to IT investments within this context and the decision to adopt cloud computing and, additionally, the presentation of some managerial implications of these findings. Research limitations and suggestions for changes in future studies are also presented

Healthcare gamification: Science mapping the body of literature

Healthcare gamification is a research topic being investigated in numerous contexts. As it is an interdisciplinary subject, it is hard for researchers to keep up with the research published in these venues. This paper aims to unveil the intellectual structure of the healthcare gamification research field through a systematic literature review. We apply a science map strategy to a 520- document database. This database was analyzed to build an evolutionary map revealing the most co-cited authors, their publications, and the theories used. Results evidence that referenced research can be classified into six research traditions. Finally, research opportunities are presented

How to Engage Users through Gamification: The Prevalent Effects of Playing and Mastering over Competing

    Get PDF
Over recent years, gamification has been a frequent strategy to increase user engagement. Gamification of systems is usually associated with incorporating mechanisms for attributing points and badges to guide users\u27 behaviors. However, since the dawn of the digital game industry in the 1980\u27s, Malone\u27s work has shown that the desire to play and master a game are important motivations to engage users. This paper aims to analyze the most engaging factors for gamers in the current context of technology. Using a sample of 717 users whose game preferences were classified into eight categories, representing different emphasis on playing, mastering, and competing, results show that competing is the least important factor to motivate engagement. As a consequence, we question the relevance of some of the most used gamification strategies like attributing points, badges, and reputation to participants. Additionally, we offer some suggestions for development of gamification of systems

Replication of Internet Privacy Concerns in the Mobile Banking Context

This study is a conceptual replication of the work of Hong and Thong (2013), who developed the Internet Privacy Concerns scale to measure individualsā€™ concerns regarding how personal information is handled by websites. We adapt the wording of the original survey items to the context of mobile banking and follow the same procedures to assess the scale. The replication results reinforce the stability and applicability of the scale over the years and in different scenarios. In contrast with the original study, however, we detect a high correlation between the Control and Awareness dimensions, suggesting the design of an additional second-order dimension that we label ā€œexposure managementā€ (individualsā€™ consciousness about existing controls that mitigate the risks of personal data loss)

Under a Microscope: Examining the Impact of Digital Location Tracking in the Irish Police Force

Organizational use of digital technologies to monitor employee performance is increasing in response to competitive pressures and the emergence of hybrid working scenarios. These technologies provide employers with insights that can be used to increase organizational effectiveness, but have asymmetric power implications that accentuate employee privacy concerns. This study applies a psychological contract theory lens to explore the impact of these concerns in relation to mandatory location tracking, examining the psychosocial outcomes that affect the individual and their trust in the organization. Data collected from 709 Irish police officers are tested using covariance-based structural equation modelling. The findings confirm that information privacy concerns regarding digital location tracking impact the employee and shape their trust relationship with the organization through three pathways, the first being a direct effect, the second arising from the associated loss of autonomy and the third being through employee strain resulting from those privacy concerns

MEASURING THE ORGANIZATIONAL ANALYTICAL COMPETENCE: DEVELOPMENT OF A SCALE

    Get PDF
The massive growth in the amount of data that companies, organizations, and society have been compelled to deal with, reinforces the need for studies on subjects such as business intelligence, business intelligence and analytics, and big data. Although certain aspects of these themes are already established in research, there is still a lack of understanding and consensus on how to combine variables to encourage better use of data. In this study, we propose a comprehensive conceptualization of a new construct -- analytical competence (ACOMP) -- comprised of three dimensions grounded in the business intelligence and analytics literature and absorptive capacity theory. To properly develop the ACOMP scale, we followed a six-step procedure and collected data from 82 organizations. We validated a nomological model where the ACOMP scale was tested as an antecedent of organizational performance regarding making decisions and learning. The results of this study provide support for ACOMP as a valid and reliable scale that is useful for both academic and managerial purposes

In the strategy literature, outsourcing Information Technology (IT), especially the IT infrastructure is not considered competitive because of the standardization of this technology. By being fully available to any company literature states that this type of outsourcing should not be able to generate value differential among organizations. On the other hand, outsourcing may allow the potential release of the organizationā€™s resources in order to concentrate on its core activities, which can lead to greater efficiency of resource allocation, and the economic literature addresses this possibility. To test which of these explanations is prevalent in the case of Brazilian companies that outsource IT infrastructure, this study carried out an analysis of the impact on the perception of the market value of companies that have announced this type of contract between January 1st, 2001 and August 31st, 2010 using the technique of event studies. The results showed evidence that the outsourcing of such technology by publicly traded companies in Brazil is perceived by the market as a source of value, increasing the expectation of future profits, which reflects positively on their market value. Managerial implications are discussed and proposals for future studies are presented.Key words: outsourcing, information technology, IT infrastructure, market value, event study.
